Youth Work Volunteer

This is an important role that will help enable Safe and Sound to engage with young people in hard to reach and targeted locations across Derbyshire. Safe and Sound provides support to children, young people and families affected by child exploitation in Derby and Derbyshire, and works to improve knowledge and understanding of the issue nationally, to ensure that those affected receive the support they need to move forwards in their lives.
Safe and Sound is looking for committed individuals with some previous experience or who would like to gain experience, to help support our Youth Work team in the planning and delivery of this programme. Safe & Sound is a specialist organisation which seeks to reach out to children and young people that are at risk of or involved in child exploitation.
We are hoping that you will assist us by working with our dedicated youth team to deliver youth work in various areas and venues across Derbyshire.

What will you be doing?

• You will be accompanied by Safe and Sound workers and volunteers to venues and areas across Derbyshire where children and young people aged up to 18 years meet;
• You will support the delivery of projects and activities for young people aged 11 – 18 at all levels of child exploitation risk including those referred to our service. This will be in a variety of settings, one to one, group working and one day projects/events/activities.
• You will build up a relationship with the young people that you meet and pass on information about the project, what we offer and facilities available;
• Keep client information confidential;
• Signpost young people to other agencies when relevant;
• To complete related administration work required for youth sessions;

What skills are required?

• An interest and commitment to support children and families affected by child exploitation;
• A positive can-do attitude;
• Excellent communication skills;
• Confidentiality; This role involves you having access to personal information regarding vulnerable young people, it is important that you recognise and respect the need for confidentiality;
• Understanding of diversity and different communities;
• Previous experience of working or volunteering in the not-for-profit sector or working in child protection/safeguarding (voluntary or statutory), is desirable but not essential;

Additional important information

• A significant proportion of the youth activities take place in the evenings and at weekends. It is carried out in a variety of ways at different settings;
• The volunteering opportunity is on going but, as provide in depth training and an enhanced DBS check, we would like you to commit to a minimum one year if at all possible;
• You will be invited to have regular review and support sessions;
• We also require you to be punctual for each session.

Getting Support

• We have developed a training package to ensure you will have the skills to undertake this role. The training will take place over one 3-hour session and we will try to fit training around your other commitments and responsibilities but we do require you to complete the training before you can begin your volunteering role with us;
• We will offer other training opportunities on relevant subjects and interests as they become available in order to help you develop your skills and increase your knowledge;
• Your lead worker be available to provide you with ongoing support. You will also be given regular opportunities to give and receive feedback on a more formal basis.

We will provide:

• Agreed expenses which will be paid on a reimbursement basis: if this causes difficulties, we will make alternative arrangements;
• Uniform (if required) and identification;
• An enhanced DBS which will be completed before you can begin volunteering. We will cover this cost;
• A confidentiality agreement;
• A full induction programme volunteer handbook and regular 1-1 support.
