Active Travel Volunteer Drivers

Our friendly team of Active Travel drivers help increase mobility and independence especially for vulnerable, elderly and less mobile residents of South Derbyshire. They offer practical support, friendly company and a safe journey to and from their essential and or social appointments.

Could you be one of them? You would be taking clients from their homes to their essential appointments and back, using your own vehicle and accompanying them at the destination if necessary.

When?

This is a very flexible role with no minimum time commitment. We offer regular training and support. You will be making a huge difference in our clients life.

Is a driving license required?

Yes, volunteers must also inform their insurance company that they are intending to or are volunteer driving.

Are expenses covered?

Yes, where a volunteer needs to use their own car, CVS will pay mileage at a rate of 45p per mile. Unavoidable parking charges can be claimed where agreed in advance.

What will you be doing?

The Volunteer Driver role is very flexible, and volunteers will be able to choose what tasks they do depending on their availability as tasks may be required at short notice. Depending on the needs of the clients, tasks may include
activities such as:
- Providing a lift for someone on discharge from hospital
- Providing lifts to and from the hospital or doctors for
appointments, accompanying them to the correct
department, waiting with them until their appointment
and then driving them home
- Driving and accompanying someone to an event or
appointment
 Driving someone to visit friends or relatives.

What skills are required?

Volunteers will need to have a full driving licence and their own vehicle that will need to be appropriately insured, taxed and have an MOT if required. Volunteers will also need:
• To have good listening and communication skills
• To be punctual, reliable and committed
• To be respectful, non-judgemental and committed to Equality & Diversity
• To establish and work within the agreed boundaries of the role
• To understand and work within South Derbyshire CVS policies and procedures, including Confidentiality, Equality & Diversity, Safeguarding, and Personal Safety
• To complete mileage returns on a monthly basis
All Volunteer Drivers will be required to have an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (criminal record) check. However a criminal record does not necessarily debar a person from volunteering – each case will be considered on depending on the nature of the offence(s) committed and how long ago it took place.

Will training be given or available?

Yes, full induction training is provided and all volunteers will be asked to complete this before they volunteer with us. Volunteers are offered regular 1-2-1 supervision and support as required.

Additional important information

Volunteers will be contacted via phone, or email to ask if they are available to carry out tasks. Volunteers will then respond if they are able to help and will be given the information needed to carry out the role. We encourage all volunteers to volunteer with us for a minimum of 6 months.
