Volunteering Sessions at Whistlewood Common

What to expect on the day:

Arriving and getting there: You’re welcome to park your car in the field when you arrive. Parking is free. Public bus travel is also possible, with bus stops very close to the site.

Please check our website for more details: https://whistlewoodcommon.org/contact-visit-us-final-copy/

Gentle start:

We usually meet at 1 pm in the “Hub” for a welcome, introductions, and a quick run-through of the plan for the afternoon.

Keep everyone safe:

We’ll cover a simple health and safety briefing, including any risks and how to use tools safely (if needed).

Learning as you go:

Tasks are explained clearly, and there’s always someone to guide you.

Work at your own pace:

Join in as much or as little as you like. There’s a range of activities to suit different energy levels and interests.

Breaks & facilities:

Take breaks whenever you need. Drinking water is encouraged and toilets are available on site (just a short walk away or up to 5 minutes depending on where you’re working).

Ending together:

We usually finish around 4 pm, often gathering a little before the end to share a brew by the fire. Sometimes people bring along biscuits or cake to share too!

If you have any questions about volunteering please email admin@whistlewoodcommon.org. You do not need to let us know that you are coming to volunteering, although it always helps with knowing how big a packet of biscuits to get!

Nature Signage Workshop

Whistlewood Common, Melbourne, DE73 8DH

Whistlewood is developing a series of nature interpretation signs and we need your ideas!

What features should we highlight? What stories should we tell? How can we inspire visitors to notice, appreciate and help nature? What photos, illustrations or creative approaches could bring the signs to life?

If you enjoy writing engaging text, coming up with playful ideas, telling stories, taking photos, drawing, illustrating, or simply thinking creatively, we'd love your input.

This will be a relaxed, collaborative session in the shelter where we'll start shaping the messages and designs that will help visitors connect with Whistlewood's nature for years to come.
