The Food Bank provides emergency food parcels to individuals and families who have been referred by partner agencies or have self-referred. The Food Bank Volunteer role is key to the success of the efficient running of the Food Bank.

When?

Monday, Thursday and Friday between 12.30PM -3.00PM. Any amount of time within these hours would be appreciated and agreed in advance and on a regular basis.

What will you be doing?

Organise donated food items by category (e.g., canned goods, fresh produce, dry goods).
Check expiration dates and ensure items are safe for distribution and or consumption.
Sorting items, restocking the shelves, and operating in line with stock rotation procedures to ensure food is distributed in date order.
Follow guidelines to ensure the safety and quality of distributed food.
Assemble food parcels for collection using the appropriate guidelines to best meet the needs of the individual or family.
Ensure each package meets dietary and nutritional requirements (where possible).
Greet volunteer collection drivers, delivery teams and or donors and assist with unloading donations.
Organise and store incoming food donations safely.
Help distribute food parcels to individuals referred or partner agencies who may attend on their behalf to collect.
Help with carrying packages to vehicles if necessary.
Treat everyone with fairness, equity, dignity and respect and challenge stereotyping, prejudice and bias.
Be a positive representative of the South Derbyshire CVS Food Hub on Poverty. Supporting South Derbyshire CVS Food Bank campaigns and one-off volunteering opportunities in your local area, such as supermarket collections.
Set up and dismantle event equipment and manage donation booths.
Ensure that the workspaces are kept clean and organised, to actively participate in in a range of duties which aim to maintain a high standard of cleanliness and notifying the Foodbank officer of any concerns.
Understand and follow appropriate policies and procedures ensuring any Health and Safety or Safeguarding issues or concerns are to the Foodbank Officer.
Dispose of any expired or unusable food waste properly.
Mentor new volunteers or oversee small teams during volunteering events.

What skills are required?

Ability to sort, inventory, and assemble food parcels efficiently.
Manage tasks effectively during busy periods.
Attend annual mandatory training as determined by the organisation.
Work well with other volunteers and staff.
Communicate effectively to ensure smooth operations.
Treat clients with empathy, dignity, and respect.
Handle questions or concerns with patience and understanding.
Ability to lift and carry heavy items, such as food boxes.
Stand or move for extended periods during shifts.
Check expiration dates and ensure food safety compliance.
Pack food parcels with accuracy and care.
Handle unexpected challenges, such as shortages or last-minute changes.
Able to adapt to a fast-paced or dynamic environment.
Understand and respect diverse backgrounds, languages, and dietary needs.
Provide clear instructions or assistance to service users and other volunteers.
Record data accurately for inventory and distribution tracking, where required.
Use simple tools or systems for documentation if needed.

Is training provided?

Yes, you will be required to complete induction, and mandatory Manual Handling, Safeguarding, EDI and Data Protection Training with periodic refreshers,

Full induction training is provided, and all volunteers will be asked to complete this before they volunteer with us.
Confidential 1:1 support from the Food Hub Officer will be provided as required.
