Local Group Volunteer

Tools with a Mission (TWAM)

Anywhere within England and Wales (but not Devon or Cornwall).

Local Groups consist of like-minded volunteers who work together to collect tools, sort them and sometimes do basic refurbishment. They generally have access to a garage or two for storage and a large shed or two for sorting. It's a great role for people who enjoy volunteering in a team. If we don't have a Local Group in your area, perhaps you could help us start one!

What will you be doing?

Each local group has a Coordinator and any number of members. As a Local Group volunteer, you'll be part of a team of people who share our passion for creating livelihood tools and work together to collect them from your local community.
You can help to arrange tool collections at local supermarkets, DIY stores, and garden centres, and even offer talks to local community groups or speak on local radio.
Local groups make such a difference as they bring together like-minded people to collect tools, run tool collection events, and promote TWAM in their area.
They are great ways to encourage friendship and share a mutual enthusiasm for tools, recycling, and practical care. Many groups are church-based, but they don't have to be. They need some keen people to get them started and a place to store tools and hopefully do some basic sorting and refurbishment. Spare garages and garden sheds make a good start.
Why we want you
A Local Group is a team of people who share our passion for livelihood, creating tools and who get together to collect tools from their area. Many also offer talks to local community groups and speak on local radio. Some groups sort the tools before arranging collection, and some even do some refurbishment, such as grinding off the rust and fixing loose handles. You will need somewhere to store tools, such as a vacant garage or big shed. Our local groups have a great community spirit and greatly support TWAM.
What you will be doing
• Collecting tools from members of the general public (either as a drop-off point or collecting from the donors)
• Promoting TWAM locally to generate your own tool donation requests
• Sorting the tools so that all broken and unusable tools are removed
• Doing basic tools refurbishment as facilities and skills allow
• Optionally speaking to local groups about TWAM or arranging events to fundraise for TWAM.

What skills are required?

The skills you need
Enthusiasm for TWAM and the transforming power of tools
Ability to carry our basic refurbishment if you intend your group to do this
Creative and an ideas person if you plan to organise events
Able to comply with TWAM policies if driving for Local Group activities

Is training provided?

Yes, we have many resources for you and ideas on how to start up and link with your local community.
