The Squirrels Team Member supports the delivery of a safe, fun and engaging programme for young people aged 4–6 years within the Squirrel Scout Drey.

What will you be doing?

Working as part of the leadership team, the role involves:

- Assisting in planning and delivering age-appropriate weekly activities aligned with the Squirrels programme
- Supporting games, crafts, storytelling, songs and simple outdoor activities
- Helping to create a warm, inclusive and welcoming environment for young children and their families
- Ensuring safeguarding, health and safety procedures are followed at all times
- Supporting young people in developing early social, communication and teamwork skills
- Encouraging participation and celebrating achievements
- Assisting with simple record-keeping and badge recognition
- Communicating appropriately with parents/carers and contributing to positive relationships
- Working collaboratively with other volunteers to ensure sessions run smoothly
- The role is hands-on and nurturing, helping young children take their first steps into Scouting in a safe and structured environment.

What skills are required?

The Squirrels Team Member role requires enthusiasm, patience and a genuine interest in supporting young children aged 4–6 as they begin their Scouting journey.

Previous Scouting experience is not essential, as full training and support are provided. However, the following skills and experience are particularly valuable:

Essential Skills and Qualities:
- A warm, patient and encouraging manner
- Good communication skills, particularly when interacting with young children and their families
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Reliability and a willingness to take responsibility
- Creativity and energy in supporting fun, engaging activities
- A commitment to safeguarding, inclusion and equality

Desirable Skills and Experience:
- Experience working or volunteering with young children (e.g. early years, education, childcare, youth groups or sports coaching)
- Experience supporting group activities such as crafts, games or storytelling
- Basic understanding of child development and age-appropriate behaviour management
- First aid knowledge (or willingness to undertake training)
- Any additional skills that could enhance sessions (e.g. music, crafts, outdoor activities, creative play)

All volunteers are required to complete appropriate Scout training and undergo a DBS check in line with safeguarding requirements.

Above all, the most important requirement is a positive attitude and a genuine desire to help young children build confidence, friendships and early life skills in a safe and supportive environment.
