The Scouts Section Team Member supports the delivery of a safe, engaging and high-quality programme for young people aged 10½–14 years.

What will you be doing?

Working as part of the section leadership team, the role involves:
- Assisting in planning and delivering a varied weekly programme aligned with Scout values and badge requirements
- Supporting the running of meetings, activities and games in a safe and inclusive manner
- Helping to organise and attend camps, hikes, outdoor activities and residential experiences
- Encouraging young people to develop leadership, teamwork and independence
- Supporting the monitoring of badge progress and recognising achievement
- Contributing to risk assessments and ensuring health and safety procedures are followed
- Acting as a positive role model and upholding the values of Scouting
- Communicating appropriately with parents/carers when required
- Working collaboratively with other leaders and volunteers to ensure smooth section operation
- The role is hands-on and youth-focused, supporting young people as they challenge themselves, learn new skills and prepare for greater independence.

What skills are required?

The Scouts Section Team Member role requires enthusiasm, reliability and a commitment to supporting young people aged 10½–14 in a safe and engaging environment.

Previous Scouting experience is helpful but not essential, as full training and support are provided.

The following skills and experience are particularly valuable:

Essential Skills and Qualities
- Good communication skills, particularly the ability to engage positively with young people
- A supportive and encouraging approach, acting as a positive role model
- Teamwork skills and the ability to work collaboratively with other volunteers
- Reliability and a willingness to take responsibility
- An understanding of, and commitment to, safeguarding and inclusion
- Flexibility and a proactive attitude

Desirable Skills and Experience
- Experience working or volunteering with young people (e.g. education, youth work, sports coaching or similar)
- Experience supporting outdoor activities such as camping, hiking or adventurous activities
- Basic knowledge of health and safety practices
- Skills that could enhance the programme (e.g. first aid, bushcraft, navigation, sports, creative arts, STEM activities)
- Experience in mentoring, coaching or supporting youth leadership

All volunteers are required to undertake appropriate Scout training and complete a DBS check in line with safeguarding requirements.

Above all, the most important requirement is a genuine enthusiasm for helping young people build confidence, resilience and life skills through fun, challenging and inclusive activities.
